High Specific Energy Aluminium-ion rechargable decentralised electricity generation sources

H2020-NMP-2014  –  Two-stage – project n°646286

The ALION (High Specific Energy Aluminium-ion rechargable decentralised electricity generation sources) project focuses on the development of Al-ion battery technology for energy storage via decentralised electricity generation sources.

ALION is pursuing an integrative approach employing electroactive materials based on the “rocking chair” mechanism, robust ionic liquid-based electrolytes and new cell and battery concepts, in order to achieve an affordable technology with improved performance, safety and reliability compared to current energy storage solutions (e.g. pumped hydroelectric storage, compressed air energy storage, Li-ion batteries, redox flow batteries, etc.).

The project covers the entire value chain, from materials and component manufacturers to battery manufacturers, right through to validation of the technology in a specific electrical microgrid system including a renewable energy source (i.e. a mini-wind turbine, a photovoltaic system, etc.). The final objective of this project is to obtain an Al-ion battery module validated in a relevant environment, with a specific energy of 400 W.h/kg, a voltage of 48V and a lifetime of 3000 cycles. The project is funded by the European Commission and involves 13 partners from across Europe.
